What does a pump do?
Water pump is an important part of automobile cooling system.
It takes water from the radiator to the engine and back again.
This pump helps to ensure that the engine maintains a constant temperature.
What can cause a pump to fail?
The pump uses impeller blades and centrifugal force, like a turbocharger, to move water through a vehicle's cooling system.
If the bearing contained in the pump is worn or damaged, the pump may fail, which is one of the most common reasons for car pump failure.
Another major failure point for the pump may be the belt tensioner.
Since the pump is driven by a synchronous belt or serpentine belt, failure of the belt tensioner (the thing that keeps the belt tight) may cause pump failure.
What are the signs of pump failure?
You don't need to be a mechanic to recognize when your pump is out of the door.
Here are some of the most common.
Coolant leakage
The pump has several gaskets that can be damaged or worn over time.
When that happens, they can let the coolant escape and drip under the vehicle.
If you notice green or red liquid in the center area of the front of your car, it's time to check the pump.
