China is taking significant steps to enhance the safety of driver assistance systems (ADAS) as their adoption rapidly increases. A newly proposed mandatory national standard, the Safety Requirements for Combined Driver Assistance Systems in Intelligent and Connected Vehicles, is currently open for public comment.

The move addresses growing concerns within the booming smart car industry. While ADAS penetration surges, some automakers have been accused of misleading marketing, blurring the lines between assisted driving (Level 2) and full automation. This confusion has led to consumer over-reliance and preventable accidents.

The proposed standard, led by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), will apply to passenger and commercial vehicles equipped with ADAS (often referred to as L2 systems).

It sets clear technical requirements covering critical areas:

  1. Vehicle motion control capabilities
  2. Driver monitoring systems (DMS) to detect attentiveness
  3. Requirements for driver intervention
  4. System detection capabilities
  5. Overall system safety and functional safety
  6. Defined test methods for key scenarios
  7. This mandatory regulation aims to:
  8. Constrain system performance to ensure baseline safety.
  9. Reduce accidents caused by system deficiencies.
  10. Boost overall road safety in China.

While the standard is a crucial step, effective implementation and enforcement will be key. Regulators will need robust monitoring mechanisms.
