How to check the brake pads, brake discs and brake fluid in the car braking system

Whether the braking system of a car can function normally is an important issue related to driving safety. The following mainly introduces how to check the brake pads, brake discs and brake fluid in the automobile braking system, so as to ensure the normal function of the braking system and ensure the driving safety.

Brake Pads

The most important inspection item for brake pads is its thickness. Since most modern vehicles are disc brakes, it is relatively easy to inspect the brake pads. Unlike drum brakes, which require dismantling of the outer drum, you only need to look through the gaps of the calipers. Observation can be done. If it is removed and the measurement is found to be less than 2mm or the warning iron plate has been worn out, it needs to be replaced to ensure the normal operation of the brake system.

Brake Disc

In terms of brake discs, the focus of inspection is also on its thickness. The original brake discs of some German cars are generally marked with a safe thickness value. A special instrument can be used to measure whether the thickness of the brake disc is within the allowable range. It can only be confirmed by the experience of the technician during maintenance.

Because the outer edge of the brake disc sometimes fails to grind the brake pads, if only the traditional vernier caliper is used to measure the thickness, the data obtained will be wrong, so some masters will use the thickness gauge to measure the thickness of the brake disc to determine the brake disc Whether the thickness is still within the safe value.

The reason why you need to check the thickness of the brake disc is that when the thickness of the brake disc becomes very thin, in addition to increasing the chance of overheating deformation, the caliper piston will also be easily stuck because it is pushed out too much. In addition, whether the brakes are sharp enough, you can tell by looking at the color of the brake disc, so as to know whether it is appropriate to match the brake pads.

If the surface of the brake disc is shiny, that is, silver and bright, it means that the braking performance is fully exerted. Overheating causes surface blackening. In other words, the grade of the brake pads is not enough, it is best to replace a set of brake pads with a stronger friction coefficient in order to fully exert the effect of the braking system.

Over time, the brake vibration is often caused by the deformation of the brake disc. The fastest way to confirm is to use a micrometer to measure the flatness of the brake disc surface. Although it is a bit labor-intensive, it can quickly grasp the problem. It is found that the brake disc has been overheated and deformed, and it is recommended to replace it with a new one.

Brake Fluid

The best way to test the quality of brake fluid is to use a special wet boiling point detection instrument to check, soak the instrument probe in the brake fluid, and the current water content and wet boiling point value of the brake fluid will appear on the display, the safety value should be within 2% of the water content and the wet boiling point of more than 170 degrees. If it exceeds the safety value, it is recommended to replace the new brake fluid.

In addition, it is also necessary to observe the brake fluid in the brake fluid pot to see if it turns black or yellow. If so, it means that the oil has deteriorated and needs to be replaced. Finally, the inspection of the oil quantity is also indispensable. Observe whether the oil quantity falls between the high and low marks marked on the oil pot. If it is too low, add it directly, and if you can add the original brake fluid, it is the best choice.

The following is an instrument specially used to test the wet boiling point of brake fluid. The standard value should be more than 170 degrees of the wet boiling point of the fluid within 2% of the water content.

The braking system of the car is directly related to our driving safety. Therefore, we often check the braking system and replace the brake parts in time.
